Keep on talking about check-raising. According to widely spread views check-raising in poker is a common deceptive play in which a player checks early in a betting round, hoping someone else will open.
In other words, being in early position, you can check-raise to get a read on your opponents’ strengths, while still presenting the best poker hand. Rise when your opponent comes back around.
Last time I mentioned several reasons of check-raising. Check-raising gives you an opportunity to cheat (i.e. it reminds me of bluffing):
- Often players are afraid of new check-raisings, avoid it all possible ways, and give a free card. On the other side, if somebody raises a stake, so one makes it possible to understand that he’s got a strong hand.
- Check-raising creates your image, ’cause in the future opponents won’t be absolutely sure on a check on your side. Anyway, this kind of tricks both let you get extra money and inspires the opponents with fear and uncertainty. A player who has frequently been check-raised may be less likely to attempt to steal the pot.
- However, most of skilled poker stars rarely use check-raise in no-limit games. Sometimes it’s more profitable to bet a good hand not taking into account that your opponent will try to bluff. A failed check-raise gives other players the chance to see free cards, improving their hands and it demonstrates that you may have a very strong hand.
As a result, check-raising is a very useful way to get your opponents to put more money into the pot. Furthermore, it helps control the pot, read your opponents. It’s a valuable strategy, whether it be pre-flop, flop, turn or river.
